Trade floor migration & move projects are faced with many challenges such as: “should the trader PC be moved away from the floor to a central data room?” Remote desktop solutions can be categorised into analogue and digital technologies. The first is the traditional “video-switching” type of solution, which transfers the KMVA (keyboard, mouse, video and audio) analogue signal from the remote desktop(s) to the trader desk. As there are limits on the distance that the analogue signal can be carried, this type of solution cannot be implemented in any trading floor environment. The second group consists of solutions which transfer the KMVA signal digitally via IP. Here, there is not a limit on the distance between the desktop and the trader desk.
Apart from the financial consequences, a remote desktop solution will have an impact on trader mobility, climate technology (HVAC), system performance, hardware & software maintenance, security and business continuity facilities.
Another challenge is to simplify and rationalise the use of different technologies at the trader desk, such as telecommunication and PC technology. Unified communications (UC) covers the integration of real-time communication services with non real-time communication services. UC integrates for example instant messaging (chat), IP telephony and video conferencing, with integrated voicemail, e-mail, SMS and fax. By having these services integrated in a consistent unified user interface, the user is in better control over his business processes. Simplification leads to optimisation.
